Drama ensued recently when a Grade ‘A’ Court sitting at Itoro, Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State of Nigeria granted one Mr. Kamoru Lawal, the prayer for the dissolution of his marriages contracted traditionally with his wives, Mrs Obedatu Lawal, Mrs Muibat Lawal and Yesirat Lawal. In his judgment, the President of the Customary Court, Mr. A. Kanimodo warned Mr Kamoru Lawal to be very careful of his decision for the dissolution of his marriage to his three wives on the same day despite appeal by some members of the family and the court. The plaintiff, Mr. Lawal had told the court that the three wives always engaged in constant fighting, constant threat to his life and incompatible relationship which he could no longer cope with and had to take the decision to save his life.

According to the 1st defendant, Mrs. Obedatu Lawal, she got married to the plaintiff 13 years ago with two issues and a pregnancy. The court ruled that the marriage had been dissolved and that the plaintiff who admitted to the pregnancy, should take care of her and the two issues, while the court also dissolved the marriage of the second defendant, Mrs Munibat Lawal whose marriage was contracted traditionally 36 years ago and had five issues namely; Yussuf Lawal, 34 years, Bilikisu Lawal, 32 years, Haaijat Lawal 29 years, Muniru Lawal 28 years and Fatimat Lawal, 26 years. The court, however, ruled that the second marriage should be dissolved too since the second defendant had not been living with the plaintiff for the past 10 years, and noted that it was obvious that the customary relationship had hit the rock and shattered. The court equally noted that all the issues produced by the marriage were grownups who could take decisions on their own, and thereby dissolved the marriage while ordering the second defendant, Mrs Muibat Lawal to pack out of the plaintiff’s house and should not cause any conduct that might break down the peaceful atmosphere within the premises of the plaintiff. In respect of the third defendant, Mrs Yesirat Lawal, she claimed to have contracted the marriage with the plaintiff 27 years ago, while also alleging lack of care and constant fighting. The four issues of the marriage are Afusat Lawal, 27 years, Mariam Lawal, 22 years, Shadiat Lawal, 19 years and Kudus Lawal, 12 years. The court finally ruled that since the plaintiff had made up his mind to divorce the three wives despite the appeal of the court, the marriages should be dissolved.
