KWHA approves additional 5 Special Advisers

The Kwara State House of Assembly on Tuesday gave approval to Governor AbdulFatah Ahmed to appoint additional five Special Advisers

The approval was sequel to the request made by the Governor in a letter to the House read by the Speaker, Dr Ali Ahmad during Tuesday plenary.

The Governor in his letter said the appointment of additional Special Advisers will assist him in delivering good governance in the task ahead in the state.

The Governor said he was making the request in accordance with section 196 (1&2) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic (as amended).

He urged the House to give accelerated approval to the request to enable government activities move at faster rate.

The request was unanimously approved by all members immediately the Speaker put the question to the House.

The Speaker directed the Clerk of the House, Mr Oyetunde Oyeniyi to intimate the Governor of the approval to appoint five Special Advisers.

It would be recalled that Governor Ahmed had requested for approval to appoint 10 Special Advisers on Tuesday, 28th July, 2015 which the House also approved.

The Governor is yet to appoint any commissioners since the commencement of his second term in office.

He attributed the reason during a programme tagged 'Governor Explains' to poor financial situation of the state.

Also, during Tuesday plenary, the House urged the Federal Government to expedite action on the immediate completion of the dredging of the River Niger to save residents in the North of imminent flooding.

The House made the call in its resolution after accepting an observation from Kamal Fagbemi (Oke-Ogun constituency) warning residents to guide against impeding flood.

The Speaker, while reading the resolution of the House said the completion of the dredging would curb flooding from the water to be release from Cameroon Dam.

The Legislators called on the Kwara government to urgently embark on sensitisation programme on the need for residents along river banks to keep off such areas.

The House called for involvement of the media, traditional rulers, religious leaders and local government councils' chairmen in the sensitisation exercise.

Meanwhile, a bill on Violence against Persons passed the first reading during Tuesday plenary of the House.

The motion for the first reading of the bill was moved by the House Leader, Hassan Oyeleke, and seconded by the sponsor of the bill, Alhaji Mohammed Baziki (Gwanara/Banni/Adena constituency).

The Speaker directed the House Committee on Rules and Business to further work on the bill for the second reading.

The bill was the first private bill from the eight Legislature in the state.

Ali Ahmad wants 30 per cent returnees for legislatures

The Speaker of the Kwara House of Assembly, Hon Ali Ahmad on Wednesday advocated that at least 30 per cent ranking members in both states and National Assemblies be retained to achieve vibrant legislation.

Ali made the suggestion in his office in Ilorin during his maiden interactive session with newsmen on Wednesday.

The Speaker who described state Houses of Assembly as only avenue for downtrodden said the re-election of some old members of the House would aid rapid infrastructural development in their states.

Such arrangement, the speaker noted, would give experienced legislators the platform to be able to educate the new lawmakers on how to present bills that would improve the wellbeing of the masses.

The Speaker called for constructive criticism from the residents in Kwara and media on the activities of the Kwara assembly to allow it achieve its objective.

Ahmad said members of the 8th legislature in the state would sponsor private bills aimed at improving the wellbeing of residents and called for implementation of Criminal Justice Act to enable perpetrators of corruption face the consequence on time.

The Speaker expressed readiness of the current assembly in the state to always respond to yearnings and aspirations of residents.
