Insurgency: Kwara Speaker urges synergy on IDP’s

Speaker of the Kwara State House of Assembly, Hon. Ali Ahmad has charged the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) and other health professionals in the country to collaborate with government in alleviating the sufferings of Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) occasioned by insurgency in the North Eastern part of the Country.

Ahmad made the appeal in Ilorin while receiving the hierarchy of the State chapter of the NMA in his office.

He, described the current insurgency pervading the North Eastern part of the country as unfortunate, expressed confidence that the nation would soon triumph over the insecurity in view of the political will demonstrated by the Buhari-led administration. He also called on NMA and other corporate organisations to join hands with the government in stabilising the Internally Displaced Persons to enable them live a normal life.

The former Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Judiciary assured that the State House of Assembly under his leadership would continue to collaborate with NMA and other health professionals in the bid to provide platform for the state government to consolidate on its performance in the health sector.

Ahmad expressed delight that the state had become a reference point in Community Health Insurance Scheme and called for continued support of the Nigerian Medical Association to ensure the passage of enduring and acceptable laws that would guarantee quality and affordable healthcare delivery system for the people of the state.

He praised the state chapter of the association for making the state proud and assured that the legislature would give necessary support to ensure successful hosting of its forthcoming National Executive Council (NEC) meeting holding in the state at the end of the month.

The speaker expressed readiness of the House of Assembly to support the passage of a law that would ensure that only health professionals emerge as Commissioner for Health in the state, pointing out that the law would benefit the people and the health system.

Earlier, the association Chairman, Dr. Abubakar Ayinla, expressed confidence in the ability of the speaker to consolidate on the performance of the 7th legislature in view of his pedigree in the National Assembly and law profession.

He said the NEC meeting themed “National Health Agenda Purpose, Means and Target” would examine the numerous challenges confronting the Health Sector in the country.

The NMA, according to him, would also embark on community services like surgeries, dental and eye operations for more than 2,500 Kwarans.

Meanwhile, the Kwara State House of Assembly has directed its ad-hoc Committees on Energy, Works and Transport and Ethics, Privileges, Public Service and Judiciary to look into the possibility of amending the state Environmental Law and Kwara State Road Maintenance Agency (KWARMA) Law with a view to finding lasting solution to indiscriminate erection of speed breakers in the state's roads.

The directive was sequel to a matter of Public Importance raised by a member representing Okuta/Yashikira Constituency, Hon Adamu Usman.

Usman said the damage being caused by indiscriminate erection of speed breakers to the huge investment of government on the roads required urgent attention.

The lawmaker noted that he was aware that the 7th legislature had twice passed resolutions on indiscriminate erection of speed breakers.

He said though implementation had commenced on the resolutions of the 7th legislature, government needed to fast track efforts in the implementation process.

Usman particularly urged the government to take urgent steps in addressing the problems in the rural areas.

Some of the members who contributed to the debate, stressed the need for government to ensure compliance of its implementation in the rural communities.

In their contributions, the Leader of the House, Hon Hassan Oyeleke, who represents Essa/Shawo/Igboidun Constituency and Hon Jimoh Akanni of Share Oke-Ode Constituency, said there was the need to revisit the previous resolutions of the 7th legislature to determine the level of implementation.

They added that revisiting the previous resolutions would assist the House to determine if there could be any amendment.

The Speaker, Dr Ali Ahmad, directed the House ad-hoc Committees on Energy, Works and Transport and Ethics, Privileges, Public Service and Judiciary to consider the possibility of amending existing laws of relevant government agencies and ministries to find lasting solution to the problems.

The committee was given two weeks, which would lapse on 20-8-2015 to submit its report.

The House also directed its Committee on Energy, Works and Transport to investigate a complaint of Hon Jimoh Akanni on abandonment of electrification project in his constituency.

Similarly, the House urged the state government to urgently come to the aid of the people of Kaiama Local Government through the construction of Tunga-Maji bridge.
