Political leaders across the sixteen local governments of Kwara State have sought the assistance of the Senate President, Bukola Saraki on the creation of additional Local councils in the state.

National Pilot gathered that the demand was among the highpoints of an interactive session held with caucus members and political leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) last Friday in Ilorin.

Ilorin West, Moro, Oke-Ero among others, were said to have demanded for seven, three and one local government to be carved out from their present councils respectively during the meeting which reportedly have over three hundred party supporters in attendance.

Various political leaders from across the entire local governments who spoke at different times during the meeting allegedly described the idea as a populists one and maintained that only with additional local governments in Kwara state can necessary development in all spheres be achieved.

According to a party source, who was at the meeting, the leaders specially called on the Senate President to use his good office to facilitate the creation of the local councils to further improve the development of the state.

The source further added that they told the Senate President that among their expectations from him in the state is to ensure that local governments that were created under Adamu Attah administration but were scrapped by the military governments are revived as other states in the country have done.

It was learnt that they noted that creating additional local governments in Kwara would provide more opportunities and drive more development even as it will bring about more representatives at the councils, state and federal level.

“The issue was one of the highpoints of deliberation during the meeting. Most of the local governments’ representatives requested the leader to use his high office especially now that he is the senate president to facilitate the creation of local governments in the state which we noted has been long overdue.

“As the Senate President, we have to appeal to you to use as always your good office to facilitate and ensure the implementation of this populist demands”, one of the leaders was quoted to have said.

Most leaders that made personal references to their various local governments while canvassing for the issue. Ilorin West for instance demanded for additional seven local governments during the meeting while Moro requested for three and Oke-Ero one.

“The leader of the party and senate president promised to be on the same page with them on the issue”, the source added.

Meanwhile, the party leaders were also said to have called for the immortalisation of the late political icon in the state, Olusola Saraki and called on the Federal Government to name the Ilorin International Airport after him.

“They said late Saraki contributed to development of the country more than any individual in recent history and therefore immortalising his name with any of these public places like the Ilorin airport will be appropriate for his status as a patriotic Nigerian who rendered selfless service during his lifetime”, the source further added.

The Senate President reportedly called on all the representatives to always be in connection with their constituents and relate well with them adding that despite his tight schedule, he still finds time to interact with the people he is representing at the upper chamber from time to time.

This, the leader reportedly noted, will enable each representatives know and appreciate the yearnings and aspirations of the people whose mandate gave them the opportunity to be in their various places of representation in the first place.

“Such action would equally consolidate your hold to your political constituents and reduce unnecessary political struggles among yourselves. Those of us that have been very much present in the political space in the state should give way for new faces as there are many positions they can still occupy that are available now. There is space for everybody in this political process”, Saraki was quoted as saying.
