The wife of the Senate President, Mrs Toyin Saraki, yesterday maintained her innocence at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) after spending two days answering questions from the anti graft agency.

Mrs Saraki’s invitation by the EFCC has attracted widespread condemnation from supporters and loyalists of the Senate President with many attributing the issue to political harassment.

National Pilot gathered that she returned home yesterday around 2:00pm having being able to absolve her herself of any fraudulent act.

Mrs Saraki, who is a lawyer by profession, was said to have defended herself to the best of her ability.

She stormed the commission with retinue of supporters from home and across the nation, including some members of the “Like Minds” senators who accompanied her on a solidarity visit.

The Speaker of the Kwara State House of Assembly, Hon Ali Ahmad, APC State Women Leader, Hajia Sarat Adebayo and Hon representing Ilorin Central at the Kwara State House of Assembly, Segilola AbdulKadir, were among those that accompanied her on the invitation.

Others were Hajia Muslimat Ibrahim (Iyan Kwara), Hajia Kudi Lawal, Mrs Dupe Hassan, Hajia Funsho Abdullahi, Hajia Kannike among other personal staff.

In a media statement released in Abuja after the visits by her private secretary, Hakeem Olagoje, Mrs Saraki maintained her innocence, saying she has nothing to hide.

She stated that her response to the invitation by the commission was to demonstrate her willingness as a citizen with the utmost respect for the highest standards of transparency and democratic accountability.

She promised to henceforth cooperate fully with the commission and hopes for a prompt and positive resolution to the enquiry.

Mrs Saraki further reaffirmed her willingness to assist the EFCC, adding that she expects that the spirit of the enquiry will follow the global standards and principles of open democracy, transparency and impartially that the EFCC and other similar organisations around the world are founded upon.

Parts of the statement read:

“Mrs Saraki made herself available to assist the commission wholeheartedly with any lawful enquiry they may have.

“Following today’s visit, Mrs Saraki will continue to cooperate fully with the EFCC and hopes for a prompt and positive resolution in satisfaction of this enquiry.”

“Having placed an emphasis on the importance of accountability, transparency and diligent reporting, Mrs. Saraki maintains that she has always operated within the law and to the highest standards of global compliance in all of her activities.

“Mrs. Saraki reaffirmed her willingness to assist the EFCC and expects that the spirit of this enquiry will follow the global standards and principles of open democracy, transparency and impartially that the EFCC and other similar organisations around the world are founded upon.

“Mrs. Saraki looks forward to drawing a line under the matter and continuing in her global advocacy on maternal, newborn and child health.
