Local Government Workers in Kwara State are billed to resume work today (Monday) as the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employers (NULGE) has suspended its strike over unpaid salaries.

Speaking on a telephone chat with NULGE Secretary, Comrade Abayomi Afolabi on Sunday stated that the Union in conjunction with Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC) and other labour unions have decided to suspend the strike action.

The decision to suspend the strike was taken last Thursday, but official position signalling the suspension of the strike and resumption will be made today.

He said "We have met with NLC, TUC, Joint Negotiation Council, Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria (MHWUN) and National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) and agreed to suspend the strike actions as from today."

"This was as a result of agreement reached with the Governor of Kwara state, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed which he promised to pay the arrears owed to Local Government Workers."

According to him the governor assured them to be calm as the bail-out fund is yet to be released into the state for clearing their salary arrears.

He said: "The Governor told us that the N1.4billion released recently is part of the excess crude fund from Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) shared by Federal, state and local governments".

"The bail out money when released is expected to clear the remaining 2 and half months owned in most of the local councils by the state government."

Afolabi asked workers to resume work as the union will continue to monitor the release of the bail-out to pay the balance of their remaining salaries.
