Kwara State Chapter of Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees

(NULGE) yesterday embarked on strike across the 16 Local Government Areas in the state, citing unpaid salaries as reason for the industrial action.

The State Secretary of NULGE, Comrade Abayomi Afolabi made the disclosure an interview with National Pilot on Wednesday.

Afolabi said the Local Government Chairmen owe salaries ranging from five to two months.

The Chairman of the Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON), Kwara State Chapter, Barrister Lafeef Okandeji confirmed the commencement of the strike, saying the decision was taken around 4pm on Wednesday.

The NULGE Secretary said: "All local government workers in all the sixteen local governments in the State have embarked on a total strike which started today."

"The strike is related to the non-payment of salary for several months, some are owned 5months, and those owned least is 2month"

"We have joined our colleagues in other State who had embarked on the strike in a long time".

Reacting to the issue, ALGON Chairman who said there is no cause for alarm over the matter in the state, said the various local government councils have varying issues to address.

He said the payment of salaries of the local government workers have commenced yesterday.

“I saw a copy of their communiqué detailing the strike. We have commenced the payment of June salaries today (Wednesday) and those who did not get theirs now will get it tomorrow.

“Because of the rigours and stress that might be involved in going to the banks to collect their money, some of the staffers have demanded they get their monies by hand.

“So, it will not be surprising or out of place for you to see some local governments paying their staff directly by hand. Various local government council have varying issues to address.

Okandeji however said a tripartite meeting between the leadership of ALGON, NULGE and backed by the supervising ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs has been scheduled for today (Thursday) at 10am.

Meanwhile, the State Branch of Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Yekini Agunbiade denied the rumour making the rounds that labour leaders are planning to stage a protest to the Government House during the Sallah celebration over unpaid salaries.
