Eid-el-Fitri: Commodities, staples prices stable in Ilorin

Prices of commodities, staple food remain unchanged in major markets in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital as Muslims prepared ahead for the Eid-el-Fitri celebration, Pilot Business can report.

Also, it was observed that despite the cash crunch being experienced in the country, more patronage was recorded in the markets visited on Wednesday as customers make last minute rush to purchase various items in preparation for the festival.

However, it was further observed that more patronage was recorded by those engaged in sales of clothing materials, accessories, chicken and food stuffs, especially yam.

The markets visited are Mandate Ultra-modern Market, Obbo Road market at UnityRoad, Yoruba Road, Oja Tuntun, Oja Oba Markets.

A basket of tomatoes still sold for N20, 000, bucket N8, 000, custard rubber N2,000, while the least is being sold at the rate of N100. The price of bags of rice is still N8,000 to N9,000 while half-bags are sold between N4, 500 and N4, 400 and N280 per module.

Also, chickens go for N1, 500, N1, 700, N1, 800 to N2, 200 depending on the sizes desired by the customers. Turkey price per kilo is N850, chicken N800 and half-kilo is sold for N425 and N400 respectively.

Speaking with Pilot Business at Oja Tuntun on Wednesday, a trader, Mrs Mariam Akeem said festive period is the best time marketers made more sales and profits because 80 per cent of people, especially children, want to get new wears and accessories during the yuletide.

However, Mr Salihu Akande, one of the customers at Obbo Road market who came to purchased chicken on Wednesday said they are not surprised about little differences experienced in chicken prices, saying that it is a normal development during festive period.

Mr. Fredrick Olanrewaju, who sells chicken at Obbo Road said "We are selling chickens in the range of N1, 500 to N2, 200 depending on the size that the customers want".

"We are not expecting much gain this season because everybody is quite aware there is no money in town. I have sold just 2 chickens since morning, you can imagine", he said.

At Yoruba Road, a pepper seller, Ajara Pelumi, said that they are still selling peppers at the usual prices, adding that we have been witnessing more customers as people are preparing for Sallah.

According to her, a basket of tomatoes is N20, 000, bucket is N8, 000, custard rubber N2, 000, and the least N100 but we don't sell below that amount.
