Kwara State University (KWASU) Malete, is not among 200 best universities and higher institutions in Africa, the ranking released by an online platform, Journals Consortium (JC), has said.
The state-owned varsity was, however, ranked 212 best in the continent and 56 best in Nigeria, Pilot Education's checks, revealed.

JC, according to information obtained on its website, http://ranking.journalsconsortium.org, the ranking was “based on research publications and citations from the last five years (2010 to 2014) as well as visibility on the internet.”
In Nigeria, University of Ibadan (UI) was ranked best, while it was put at the eight best universities in Africa.
The top 10 include six institutions from South Africa, two from Egypt and one each from Kenya and Nigeria (University of Ibadan).
The UI was followed by University of Nigeria (13th), Ahmadu Bello University (18th), University of Lagos (UNILAG-20th), Obafemi Awolowo University (24th), University of Ilorin (31st), University of Port Harcourt (36th), Nnamdi Azikiwe University (42nd), University of Calabar (43rd), Federal University of Technology (FUTA, 49th) and Covenant University (53rd).
While releasing the ranking, the JC lamented that African universities “are still not well represented in international rankings,” hence, the ranking would assist in reflecting on the backwardness.
It said: “Journals Consortium is glad to release the 2015 African Universities and Higher Institutions Ranking. This maiden edition of the ranking includes 1447 African universities and other higher institutions of learning and research. The ranking is based on two factors: research publications and citations from the last five years (2010 to 2014) as well as their visibility on the internet (http://ranking.journalsconsortium.org/about_the_ranking#methodology).
African universities are still not well represented in international rankings. The creation of the Journals Consortium African Universities and Higher Institutions Ranking will help reflect the situation in the sphere of higher education in African universities as accurately and fully as possible to compare comparable educational systems and increase the recognition of African universities among students, employers, researchers and policy makers.
