The Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena hosted a pivotal junior welterweight match-up between Mauricio “El Maestro” Herrera (22-5, 7 KOs), arguably the uncrowned world champion, and “Hammerin” Hank Lundy (25-5-1, 12 KOs) of Philadelphia.

Lundy came out strong in the first round initially overwhelming Herrera with a flurry of combos and intense speed, but Herrera rebounded with well-placed blows that ultimately quieted Lundy’s attacks.

Struggling with an eye injury delivered through head butts in both the first and second round, Herrera’s assault was cut short as the officials called an early stoppage in the fifth round.

The scorecards were consulted, with the partially completed fifth round being scored, and Herrera was declared the winner by the narrowest margin possible-- a majority decision [where one judge had t even, the other two had it three rounds to two for Herrera.

Two of Herrera's last three fights were losses he probably did not deserve, including a bad decision in a world championship challenge against Danny Garcia].

“He stung me in the first round and I kind of lost focus,” said Mauricio Herrera. “I started finding my momentum as the rounds went on, but the issue with the cut really made the fight lose its rhythm. I can’t see how deep the cut is but I feel physically fine and could have kept going. I am in good condition and was landing good body shots and was wearing him down.”
