Shock as senate passes 46 bills in less than 10 minutes

The Senate on Wednesday passed 46 bills into law in less than ten minutes that the bills were introduced by the Chairman, Senate Committee on Rules and Business, Senator Ita Enang.

There had been some controversy and dissenting views concerning the bills which caused some uproar among but Senate President, David Mark had called for voice votes which ensured that the majority had their way and ruled in favour of the passage of the bills. As the development caused serious rowdy session, Senator Mark, told those who were not satisfied with the passage of the bills to submit their complaint in writing by Thursday, June 5, 2015 with their names and signatures for consideration. Before the bills were passed, the Senate had suspended Order 79 (1) of the Senate Standing Orders and deemed all the Bills as having passed first, second and third readings on the floor of the Senate and concur to same. The bills had been earlier accented to by the House of Representatives in the Current seventh Assembly. David Mark also stated that the senate will also commence further deliberations on the controversial Fourth Alteration Bill, which seeks to further amend the 1999 Constitution on Thursday, June 5, 2015. He finally requested that the valedictory session to formally close the Seventh Senate would be held on Thursday, June 5, 2015 The National Assembly has faced criticism over its poor performance despite taking a huge part of government budget. The National Assembly has been critices to have spent about N600 billion in four years and managed to have passed about 106 bills within the same period. The Senate passed the 46 bills just a day before the end of its four-year term. Some of the bills passed are the Federal Saving Bank act 2015, Community Service Bill, Tertiary Education Trust Fund Act Bill 2015amongst others.
